It was a neon sign advertising a nearby church, one she’d seen a hundred times but rarely registered.

“I quit the next day,” said Ginger.

“What about the boyfriend?” Kaycee asked.

“Threw me out and kept all the money.”

Judy growled.

“And your husband?” said Melissa.

“Met him a couple months later,” said Ginger. “My second sign.”

“And he forgave your sins, just like Jesus,” said Kaycee.

“After I told him, he never mentioned it again.”

“That’s love,” sighed Sandy.

“That’s survival,” said Ginger. “His family doesn’t know about my past. If they did, they’d kick me right to the curb, faster than my no-good ex.”

“Oh, I can’t believe that,” said Tina. “Candace Green seems so good.”

Noodles. Here she thought she’d been flying under the radar, but they knew of her affiliation all along.

“She is good,” agreed Ginger, and she believed it. Candace Green was a good Christian woman, her beliefs and values and faith utterly impregnable.

Maybe this was why Candace withheld her love from Ginger. Maybe it was because she sensed Ginger withheld the truth.

No. She could not chance it. While there dangled the possibility that the truth would set Ginger free, there remained the reality that the lie—the happy homemaker, the innocent pastor’s wife—kept her family whole. She would not rob her children of Greenleaf, of Paradise Estates, of their grandmother’s fierce, protective love. She had nothing to offer in their place.

“Oh, and one last confession,” said Ginger. “I’m pregnant.”
